First Aid for Safe Tick Removal by Chris Le Roy
Most people are already well aware that ticks are one of Australia’s most common insects. This is information that you should definitely be educated on if you are planning a visit here or if you just intend on spending more time in the great outdoors! There are many warm and moist areas that offer very inviting environments for these blood-sucking insects.
Interestingly, many people only associate ticks with being a concern with dogs because they love to roll around and play in the grass. However, ticks are just as happy to attach themselves to a human to feed when given the opportunity.
If you assume that you will immediately know if there is a tick on you, think again! These sneaky creatures will hide in the most inconspicuous places on your body so even those around you may not notice. Common areas where they hide include in and behind the ears, in the hair, near the genitals and under the arms.
Symptoms
It is essential that you check yourself and those around you for ticks frequently, especially if you are going to be in locations like North Queensland where there is plenty of long grass or visiting the rainforest. Most people experience minor irritation when bitten while others can suffer severe symptoms like paralysis. Common tick bite symptoms include:
- The area where the bite occurred will become extremely irritated.
- It is quite common to feel lethargic after you have been bitten.
- Some people experience muscle weakness.
- Your vision may become impaired.
- In more severe reactions, you might experience difficulty swallowing and even breathing, typically caused by swelling to the airway.
- Many individuals feel dizzy or unsteady and unbalanced when they attempt to walk after being bitten.
First Aid Tick Bite Treatment
- The most important rule to remember when removing a tick is to never squeeze its abdomen. If you do, more venom will be released into the individual, causing a worse reaction.
- Using the fine curved forceps in your first aid kit, apply pressure to the skin on both sides of the tick’s front end. Once around the tick, close the forceps parts gradually and lift slowly, allowing the tick the opportunity to withdraw its mouth.
- Take care when you use the forceps that you don’t grab the tick by its body. Incomplete removal may also result in more venom being released into the individual.
- When the tick has been removed, apply an antiseptic cream to the area and seek medical attention if needed.
- If a headache, fever, rash or aching joints becomes present at any time, during the removal, emergency medical attention is needed immediately. Hospitals in Australia offer a tick anti-venom that may be necessary.
